The Best Bars in America

Where to go and why in this Pride season

author CARLOS GREER

Ah, summer is here. You’ve achieved your weight-loss goal, and you’re ready to pump the streets of America to celebrate pride. To make life easier, we scoured your favorite cities and found the most eclectic spots to dance, lounge, hook up, and of course intoxicate, your bodies. Whether you’re a club kid, bear, gym rat, theater queen, or just a plain ol’ Joe,  we’ve got you covered.

NEW YORK

The Ritz
369 West 46th Street
Watch out Chelsea. This gem in the theater district is pulling out all of your men and making Hell’s Kitchen the new gayborhood of New York. It’s a one-stop haven for theatergoers, as you can pop in for a drink before the show and bounce back in afterward.

G Lounge
225 West 19th Street
Attractive suit-and-tie types mix with their young admirers. A circular layout provides 360-degree views of the sexy bartenders. Wet your throat with fun drinks like the Pink Pussycat.

Family@40C
40 Avenue C
Patrons describe this spot as a hot tranny mess suckin’ on hard candy while trying to figure out the equation to E = mc2. Saturday nights here are reminiscent of the Lower East Side days of Jean Basquiat. Anything goes. Legendary bouncer Thomas Onorato, aka the “door bitch,” is infamous for throwing shade, so leave all pretensions at home.

Sugarland
221 North 9th Street
Artsy, rail-thin Brooklyn cuties lure the gays of Manhattan over the bridge to Williamsburg’s newest and hippest gay bar. Graffiti art colors its walls and hipsters populate its dance floor. Bartenders opt out of wearing pants, so the sight is oh so lovely. There are a few private nooks tucked away for a late night smooch. Your wardrobe? Skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors.

Hiro
371 West 16th Street
Light skinned. Dark skinned. It’s Asian persuasion. This Japanese-themed mega club has got them all! Sunday nights belong to Hiro (it’s the only explanation as to why all the other bars are empty). Mayhem inside and out. Arrive early or prepare to spend most of your night in a line that wraps around multiple blocks.

ATLANTA

Wetbar
960 Spring Street NW
The place to see and be seen. Forty bucks will get you your own private bar, bathroom, and seating arrangements in an ultra chic VIP room. There’s also a patio upstairs with breathtaking views of midtown and downtown Atlanta.

Joe’s on Juniper
1049 Juniper St
With 32 beers on tap and more than 100 bottle varieties, this bar/restaurant easily has the best selection in town. Sassy servers and friendly downhome bartenders keep smiles on your face and laughter in the air. Chow down on their Anchor Bar wings and experience southern hospitality at its best.

WASHINGTON, DC

Cobalt Nightclub/30 Degrees Lounge
1639 R Street
All-in-one crowd pleaser. Downstairs boasts the lounge, and upstairs you’ll find the club. Full frozen-drink menu for the summer. Leblon caipirinhas anyone?

Apex
1415 22nd Street
Twenty-five years old and still the buzz of the city. College boys gyrate for muscle men, and drag queens keep the children in check. DJ Joey-O spins a fusion of house and hip hop on Saturday nights.

FT. LAUDERDALE

Jetset
109 SW 2nd Avenue
Five liquor bars. Five VIP rooms. Five times the fun. Open bar till midnight.

Bill’s
2209 Wilton Drive
Personable, insanely attractive staff makes sure that everyone knows your name. It’s the gay Cheers of Lauderdale.

Johnny’s
1116 West Broward Boulevard
Down-to-earth classic dive bar with smoke, pool tables, and young adorable strippers you actually want to tip. But if you’re looking for the cosmo crowd, this ain’t it. Buckets of Bud go for a mere six bucks. There’s nothing like a shameless gay bar that could care less about being fab. Editor’s pick.

MIAMI

Twist
1057 Washington Avenue
Several distinctive bars under one roof. Get steamy on the patio with Twist dancers. Don’t be shy—they certainly aren’t. Gulp down that vodka tonic, flip out a 20, and get a lap dance or two. It’s South Beach!

Halo
1625 Michigan Avenue
Just off the Lincoln Road bustle, relax in laid-back elegance and enjoy an afternoon mojito. Music is never overwhelming, setting the stage for that lost nightclub art: conversation. Delicious organic fare to boot seals the deal.

LOS ANGELES

The Abbey
692 North Robertson Boulevard
If West Hollywood is the gay capital of California, then The Abbey must be the governor’s mansion. Two big fireplaces, four bars, a waterfall and outdoor patio space draw huge crowds and celebs. And the flavored martinis are the best in the city.

Here Lounge
696 North Robertson Boulevard
Absolutely no flab! Hit the gym because this is the place where you’ll find the most beautiful bodies in LA. Extra-strong drinks make it the perfect first stop before going out.

Motherload
8944 Santa Monica Boulevard
No hair gel, no fake tans, and no lines! In fact, you may forget you’re in LA. This mellow conclave emphasizes cheap drinks and intimacy with your closest friends.

Factory
652 North La Peer Drive
Different styles of music pulsate in multiple rooms. Although mostly gay, it attracts a straight crowd to mix things up.
